Longhorn Adrian Ortiz outlasted Stanford’s Nolan Page in a tiebreaker as Texas rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat the 18th-ranked Cardinal 4-3 Sunday at Weller Tennis Center.
Paige broke Ortiz’s serve to take a 6-5 lead in the third set and had a chance at match point at 40-30, but he hit a forehand shot wide and double-faulted the next point, which sent the match to a tiebreaker.
Ortiz went ahead 3-0 in the tiebreaker, but he double-faulted and a couple of forehand winners by Paige tied the set.
Ortiz broke Paige’s serve at 7-6 when he hit a lob shot over the 6-foot-2 senior that landed inbounds and gave Texas the team win.
“They were both getting a little nervous there at the end,” said Texas coach Michael Center. “It was a great shot by Adrian to finish it off.”
Texas won two of three doubles matches then lost three straight singles matches to go down 3-1. UT’s Harrison Scott started the rally with a 6-2, 6-4 win against David Wilczynski at second singles, and Texas’ Julian Zlobinsky tied it with a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory against Michael Genender.
