In Wednesday’s Big 12 update and power poll, staff writer Kevin Lyttle breaks down the top six teams’ chances to win the Big 12 regular season title. Could this be the year that another team breaks Kansas’ incredible 11-year streak of regular-season titles? What are the Horns’ chances? Some highlights are below:
Some Big 12 coaches thoughts on winning the title:
“I’ve thought that before, and it didn’t happen,” Baylor coach Scott Drew said Monday. “Until it happens, Kansas is still the champ.”
“This could be the toughest one to pull out,” Kansas coach Bill Self said. “There are so many danger spots around the league.”
“The margin for error is razor-thin,” said Sooners coach Lon Kruger, whose team rallied to nip the Longhorns 63-60 on Monday. “I don’t believe you’ll see separation in the standings.”
Kevin also breaks down the league race.
Texas: 3-2 vs. contenders, 4 home/3 road games left.
The Longhorns now have the top field-goal percentage defense in the league, and they are second to WVU in turnover margin. However, the Horns are 10th in assists and free-throw shooting and ninth in rebounding margin. They have the most favorable closing schedule. Iowa State on Saturday is the last remaining road game against a contender. West Virginia, Baylor, Oklahoma and Kansas — in that order — all come to the Erwin Center.
