Texas softball releases 2016 spring schedule

The Texas softball team will play 29 games at McCombs Field in the upcoming 2016 season, but will only play 12 of its 54 regular season games out of the state of Texas.

The program released its spring schedule on Wednesday, which includes games against 10 teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season, including Super Regional qualifiers Arizona and Oklahoma. Four teams on Texas’ schedule finished 2015 ranked in the final USA Today/NFCA rankings, including No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 13 Arizona, No. 18 Baylor and No. 25 North Dakota State.

The 20161 season kicks off on on Valentines Day weekend with the annual Texas Classic. The Longhorns open the tournament on Feb. 11 against Arkansas and then play North Carolina on Feb. 12 and Feb. 13, Arkansas on Feb. 13 and will close the Texas Classic against North Dakota State on Valentine’s Day.


Texas will travel to Houston the following weekend for the Hilton Houston Plaza Invitational to face off against Toledo, Ball State, Jackson State and the host Cougars.

The Longhorns will return home on Feb. 25-28 for the Texas Invitational, which will feature games against Abilene Christian, Tulsa, Illinois and Webber State. The other two tournaments for Texas include the Maverick Classic (March 11-12) and the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii (March 16-19).

Non-conference games include  home-and-home series with Texas State (March 2 in San Marcos and March 30 at Texas) and UTSA (March 8 at Texas and April 6 in San Antonio), a three-game home series with BYU on April 1-2 that includes a doubleheader on April 2, a home doubleheader with UTEP On April 5 and a home game with Texas Southern (April 27).

Home conference games include Texas Tech (April 8-10), Oklahoma State (April 22-24), Kansas (April 29-May 1) and the regular season finale against Baylor on May 14. The Longhorns will travel to Baylor (March 25-26), Oklahoma (April 15-17) and Iowa State (May 6-8).

Texas (38-17 in 2015) has made 11 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament and returns eight starters from last year’s team that lost to UCLA in the Los Angeles Regional semifinals.
