  • Clarington could be allowed to retake the ACT next week.
  • Presuming his ACT score is good, he should get a thumb's up from NCAA, UT.

Texas signee Devonaire Clarington will be allowed to retake the ACT exam possibly as early as next week — and if all goes well, he could enroll this fall, a source with knowledge of the situation told the American-Statesman on Wednesday.

Clarington’s ACT test score was initially flagged by the NCAA Clearinghouse and was sent to ACT officials for review. Clarington told the Statesman he made a 26 on the standardized test. However, NCAA officials flagged it for being higher than his high school grades would indicate.

Initially on Wednesday, it appeared Clarington would have to retake the exam later this fall and then enroll at UT in January. However, that changed later in the day. Clarington will be allowed to take a special make-up exam, the source said.

Presuming his final score is appropriate, ACT officials would give the NCAA and Texas compliance department a thumb’s up.

The 6-foot, 5-inch tight end from Miami needs to hustle. Classes at UT begin next Wednesday, and the last day official enrollment is taken is Sept. 11.

“God has a plan for me I know it. Don’t worry everyone I will be alright,” Clarington tweeted Wednesday afternoon.

Texas compliance officials took it slow with Clarington’s status. The school could have allowed Clarington to enroll and practice. However, by doing that, Clarington would’ve started his five-year eligibility clock. By keeping Clarington off the practice field, the player now has more options.

Also on Wednesday, linebacker Cecil Cherry — who left UT after just four days earlier this month — enrolled at South Florida , and backup running back Duke Catalon enrolled at Houston, the school announced.

West Alabama officials announced that former offensive tackle Kennedy Estelle enrolled and will be on their team this season. Estelle started nine games for Texas but was suspended after the 2014 season opener for undisclosed rules violations.
