Texas 24, Oklahoma 17: The expanded boxscore

Posted October 10th, 2015

Texas 14, Oklahoma 0 — After going away for a week, the Tyrone Swoopes Package made its return and had a big impact. Swoopes ran three straight times, starting on third-and-1 and ending with a 3-yard TD. Oklahoma’s offensive line was the liability it was advertised to be and surrendered sacks to Poona Ford and Hassan Ridgeway. Defensive coordinator Vance Bedford whipped up blitzes from all over. Texas, which has struggled to establish a rushing attack this season, had 102 yards on the ground.

Texas: Marcus Johnson 24-yard TD pass from Jerrod Heard (Nick Rose PAT), 7:52
The drive: 8 plays, 77 yards, 3:25
Key play: A trick play (a reverse pass by Johnson) was incomplete, but OU was flagged 15 yards for defensive holding.

Texas: Tyrone Swoopes 3-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 5:37
The drive: 8 plays, 77 yards, 3:25
Key play: Facing a second-and-17 from OU’s 48, Heard scrambled for 25 yards down to the 23.

Halftime.  Texas 14, Oklahoma 3 — More blitzing induced more sacks, as Malik Jefferson and Paul Boyette got their hands on Baker Mayfield. Mayfield looked out of sorts and overthrew Dede Westbrook, who had beaten coverage in the end zone. OU settled for a short field goal. Last week, Armanti Foreman and Kris Boyd drew negative attention with silly tweets. This week, they did it with unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

OU: Austin Siebert 21-yard FG, 6:05
The drive: 12 plays, 67 yards, 5:03
Key play: A 10-yard defensive holding call on John Bonney gave OU a first down at Texas’ 29.

Texas 17, Oklahoma 10 — Texas chewed up nearly half of the quarter on a 15-play drive. Jay Norvell’s play-calling skewed conservative in the red zone, and Nick Rose kicked a 27-yard field goal. Under duress all day, Mayfield had not been able to go deep, but finally given the shot he fired to Sterling Shepard, who put a double-move on Duke Thomas and picked up 50 yards. That led to OU’s first TD. On the final play of the quarter, D’Onta Foreman rumbled for 81 yards to eclipse 100 yards for the second week in a row. It was the longest non-TD run since Earl Campbell’s 83-yarder against North Texas back in 1976.

Texas: Nick Rose 27-yard FG, 8:18
The drive: 15 plays, 62 yards, 6:42
Key play: On third down, needing 9 yards, Heard juked his way to 10 yards down to OU’s 23.

Oklahoma: Dimitri Flowers 7-yard TD pass from Baker Mayfield (Siebert PAT), 5:16
The drive: 8 plays, 87 yards, 2:57
Key play: A first down double move fooled Duke Thomas, and Mayfield hit Sterling Shepard for a 50-yard pass to the 7.

Final. Texas 24, Oklahoma 17 Swoopes reminded us that he can throw, too, executing a 2-yard pop pass to Caleb Bluiett in the end zone. Swoopes went crazy, sprinting up the sideline and smacking hands with teammates. Mayfield kept OU alive with a courageous scramble on fourth-and-8, but the Longhorns continued their assault of him, as Malik Jefferson and Naashon Hughes and Poona Ford registered sacks No. 5 and 6.

Texas: Caleb Bluiett 2-yard pass from Tyrone Swoopes (Rose PAT), 13:52
The drive: 5 plays, 89 yards, 1:57
Key play: A nifty draw play to D’Onta Foreman resulted in an 81-yard run to OU’s 10 on the final play of the third quarter.

Oklahoma: Samaje Perine 1-yard TD run (Siebert PAT), 8:00
The drive: 15 plays, 75 yards, 5:52
Key play: OU went for it on fourth-and-8 with 10 minutes left. And got it, on a 12-yard Mayfield keeper.
