FIRST QUARTER

Texas 17, Kansas 7 — For weeks, Jerrod Heard and Jay Norvell have taken criticism for not throwing deep. On the opening play, they fired back. John Burt got open deep and Heard found him for an 84-yard touchdown. On the next drive, Heard delivered a bullet to Lorenzo Joe for 37 yards, bringing Heard to 100 yards passing for the first time in five games. It appeared the coaches identified Saturday, against a winless opponent, as an opportune time to give increased reps to freshmen Kirk Johnson, P.J. Locke, DeSean Elliott and Kris Boyd.

Texas: John Burt 84-yard TD pass from Jerrod Heard (Nick Rose PAT), 12:06
The drive: 1 play, 84 yards, :12
Key play: See above. It was UT’s first play of the game.

The drive: 9 plays, 87 yards, 3:48
Key play: Kansas converted a fourth-and-2 at UT’s 33, a 14-yard run up the middle.

SECOND QUARTER

Halftime. Texas 24, Kansas 14 — Gashed for chunk yardage throughout the half, the defense stiffened on two goal line stops before halftime. The first ended when KU running back De’Andre Mann fumbled after being stood up by Jason Hall at the 1. To end the half, Nick Bartolotta clanked a field goal attempt off of the right upright after KU began the drive at the 5. An inexplicably bad fumble by Heard set up the Jayhawks’ first opportunity.

Texas: Swoopes 1-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 11:58
The drive: 5 plays, 17 yards, 2:07
Key play: D’Onta Foreman’s fumble at the 1 wasn’t a fumble after all; officials ruled he was down.

Kansas: De’Andre Mann 1-yard TD run (Bartolotta PAT), 8:49
The drive: 12 plays, 59 yards, 3:09
Key play: Texas had two chances to end the drive, but Davante Davis and Holton Hill each dropped interceptions.

THIRD QUARTER

Texas 38, Kansas 14 — Typically a black hole, Texas’ third quarter produced 206 yards and two Foreman rushing touchdowns, including a 93-yarder that ranks third longest in school history. UT nearly recovered a fumble when Naashon Hughes stripped Ke’aun Kinner, but P.J. Locke couldn’t cradle the ball in bounds. The deep balls continued, but Marcus Johnson dropped two of them on the same series.

Texas: D’Onta Foreman 93-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 10:01
The drive: 1 play, 93 yards, :15
Key play: See above. For you history buffs, it was the third-longest rush in UT history.

Texas: D’Onta Foreman 9-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 5:34
The drive: 9 plays, 53 yards, 3:06
Key play: On third-and-6, Heard hit Ryan Newsome for 8 yards and a first down at KU’s 41. Heard went over the 1,000-yard passing mark for the season on the play.

FOURTH QUARTER

Final. Texas 59, Kansas 20  The game officially became bizarre when Swoopes recovered a fumble of a KU fumble recovery of a Kirk Johnson fumble and ran 10 yards for his fourth TD. Swoopes played quarterback in the fourth quarter for the third time in five games, though the first for reasons other than Heard’s struggles. Freshman safety DeSean Elliott, making his debut on defense, made his first interception on a tip by Duke Thomas. Then Elliott made another one on an overthrow.

Texas: Armanti Foreman 40-yard TD pass from Swoopes (Rose PAT), 14:54
The drive: 4 plays, 68 yards, 1:59
Key play: Heard’s 23-yard scramble set the Horns up at KU’s 40.

Texas: Swoopes 44-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 13:25
The drive: 2 plays, 52 yards, :24
Key play: See above. And we’re not sure if we’ve ever seen Swoopes look faster than on that run.

Texas: Swoopes 10-yard fumble recovery run (Rose PAT), 8:49
The drive: 9 plays, 86 yards, 3:22
Key play: On third-and-14 from the 45, Swoopes found Andrew Beck, who made a nifty sideline grab, for 15 yards.

Kansas: Darious Crawley 19-yard TD pass from Keaton Perry (2-point run failed), 1:07
The drive: 11 plays, 80 yards, 3:38
Key play: On third-and-8 from the 42, Ryan Schadler broke free for a 23-yard gain to UT’s 19-yard line.
