Texas 17, Baylor 0 —Hard to believe all of the following occurred in the opening 15 minutes: A brawl broke out after Duke Thomas was slammed hard following his first interception of the season; a 410-pound Baylor player took a handoff; the nation’s No. 1 offense failed to score on five drives against a Texas defense that’ll go down as the worst in program history; and Baylor’s third quarterback, Chris Johnson, left with an injury, prompting receiver Lynx Hawthorne to take over.

Halftime: Texas 20, Baylor 0 — Jason Hall picked off Hawthorne for Baylor’s third turnover of the half, and another skirmish broke out, this time between P.J. Locke and receiver Corey Coleman. Nick Rose attempted two 53-yard field goals in the quarter, missing the first before putting Texas ahead 20-0 with the second. Baylor put together a couple of nice drives, but both ended in missed field goals.

Texas 20, Baylor 10 — Down to an emergency fourth quarterback, Baylor eschewed the pass and Johnny Jefferson and Terence Williams took eight direct snaps to get on the board. Jefferson’s 20-yard touchdown made the score 20-7. On its next drive, Baylor took 18 snaps but stalled inside the 10-yard line and settled for a field goal. Paul Boyette was credited with wrapping up Williams on third down. For Texas, safety Jason Hall and defensive end Naashon Hughes left with injuries.

Final: Texas 23, Baylor 17 — Kent Perkins blew a block on fourth down and Baylor took over, marching 61 yards to cut the deficit to 3 on Hawthorne’s 8-yard TD run. In need of a powerful response, Texas got it on its ensuing possession. Twice, Swoopes executed a third-down pop pass in the flat to Andrew Beck. That led to Rose’s third field goal of the day. On the next drive, Poona Ford came up with the play of the day with a strip of Jefferson and the recovery. By the time Baylor got the ball again, it had 94 seconds to step off 96 yards and it couldn’t.
