Texas vs. UTEP: The expanded boxscore

Posted September 10th, 2016

Texas 10, UTEP 0 — Jerrod Heard’s first-ever touchdown catch helped the sophomore celebrate his 21st birthday, and Trent Domingue kicked his second field goal of the season. But it could have been worse; Jacorey Warrick fumbled out of the end zone for a turnover and the Longhorns mustered only a field goal after starting the drive at UTEP’s own 6. The 18-Wheeler package fell flat.

Texas: Jerrod Heard 29-yard pass from Shane Buechele (Trent Domingue kick), 9:32

The drive: 3 plays, 60 yards, 37 seconds; Key play: A 15-yard hands to the face penalty moved Texas to UTEP’s 29 on the play before the score.

Texas: Domingue 22-yard field goal, :39

The drive: 4-1-1:37; Key play: It was a blocked punt by freshman safety Brandon Jones that set UT up at the Miners’ 6.

Halftime. Texas 20, UTEP 7 — Aaron Jones eventually cut into the Longhorns’ lead with a 51-yard touchdown run. That one run accounted for 44 percent of his first-half yardage. Trent Domingue added his second field goal of the game and Jacorey Warrick made up for a first-quarter fumble out of the end zone with a nice touchdown catch that was reviewed and upheld.

UTEP: Aaron Jones 51-yard run (Jay Mattox kick), 8:28

The drive: 3-60-1:25

Texas: Domingue 43-yard field goal, 4:42

The drive: 11-49-3:46; Key play: UT was given new life after a third-and-6 incompletion when UTEP was flagged 15 yards for roughing the passer on the play.

Texas: Jacorey Warrick 8-yard pass from Buechele (Domingue kick), 1:22

The drive: 9-60-2:12; Key play: On third-and-5 from UTEP’s 20, Buechele found Warrick for an 11-yard gain to the 9.

Texas 34, UTEP 7 — Chris Warren III’s first touchdown of the season put Texas up by 20 points, and on that drive, it was Buechele, not Swoopes, who converted a fourth-and-1 with a run. Buechele hasn’t gone deep very often, but did connect on his first long one of the game with a long scoring pass to Dorian Leonard. UTEP dodged a bullet when a Jones fumble deep in Miners territory was called back after a review.

Texas: Chris Warren III 1-yard run (Domingue kick), 8:09

The drive: 12-52-3:30; Key play: There were four first downs on the drive, the biggest being a 5-yard run by Buechele on fourth-and-1.

Texas: Dorian Leonard 46-yard pass from Buechele (Domingue kick), 6:07

The drive: 2-54-25 seconds

Final. Texas 41, UTEP 7 — Buechele exited with about five minutes left in the game. Swoopes ran out the clock. The Miners lifted their starting quarterback and running back as well. Warren ended up five yards shy of the 100-yard mark for the game, but also saw freshman Kyle Porter get 16 carries on the night with D’Onta Foreman missing the game. Heard’s second score of the night was a fitting candle to his birthday cake.
