FIRST QUARTER

Texas 17, Cal 7 — Shane Buechele left for the locker room after taking a hard hit to the chest, but Tyrone Swoopes led Texas to back-to-back touchdown drives. It was Chris Warren III, not D’Onta Foreman, who got the start and he produced two touchdown runs. We all thought Kevin Vaccaro’s fumble recovery and long runback was going to lead to even more points, but it was called back on replay.

Cal: Jordan Veasy 29-yard pass from Davis Webb (Matt Anderson kick), 12:53

The drive: 6 plays, 84 yards, 2:07; Key play: Webb’s first completion to Chad Hansen, the nation’s leading receiver, went for 26 yards to Texas’ 33.

Texas: Chris Warren III 4-yard run (Trent Domingue kick), 9:38

The drive: 13-84-3:10; Key play: A 15-yard roughing the passer penalty set Texas up at Cal’s 16.

Texas: Domingue 38-yard field goal, 7:16

The drive: 5-12-1:05; Key play: The drive was set up by a turnover on downs, as Cal was stopped on fourth-and-1 at its own 34.

Texas: Warren 12-yard run (Domingue kick), 3:31

The drive: 7-64-2:04; Key play: An 18-yard pass from Swoopes, in for the injured Buechele, to John Burt put UT on the edge of the red zone.

Cal: Vic Enwere 1-yard run (Anderson kick), :7

The drive: 10-66-3:17; Key play: An apparent fumble and long return by Kevin Vaccaro was called back because the Cal player was ruled down before the fumble.

SECOND QUARTER

Halftime. Cal 35, Texas 33 — Swoopes’ run of scoring drives came crashing to a halt when he threw high to 6-6 receiver Collin Johnson and Cal had a tip-drill interception. That led to Buechele’s return, and he threw a quick touchdown pass. But Buechele was picked off late in the quarter, and Cal converted it into a late touchdown pass to take the halftime lead. Domingue missed a 53-yard field goal attempt on the final play. That would have given the Longhorns a 36-35 lead.

Texas: D’Onta Foreman 4-yard run (Domingue kick), 13:31

The drive: 6-86-1:29; Key play: Swoopes, still in for Buechele, hit Armanti Foreman for a 34-yard pass to Cal’s 22.

Cal: Enwere 1-yard run (Anderson kick), 9:43

The drive: 5-46-1:35; Key play: Chad Hansen beat Sheroid Evans on a 38-yard catch down to the 5.

Texas: Jacorey Warrick 41-yard pass from Buechele (Domginue kick), 7:43

The drive: 8-80-1:54; Key play: Warrick’s catch WAS the key play. It was a very nice pass, but an even better play by Warrick, who separated himself from his defender as the ball came in.

Cal: Melqui Stovall 29-yard pass from Webb (Anderson kick), 4:55

The drive: 8-58-2:40; Key play: On third-and-9, Webb found Bran Singleton for a 15-yard first down to UT’s 29.

Texas: Safety, Brandon Jones blocked put out of the end zone, 1:43

Cal: Hansen 23-yard pass from Webb (Anderson kick), :55

The drive: 2-24-:23

THIRD QUARTER

Cal 35, Texas 33 — So much for a second-half shootout. Neither team scored in the third. Penalties hurt the Longhorns dearly; a  holding call on freshman center Zach Shackelford negated a Foreman run down to Cal’s 7, and a false start call on Shackelford on the next drive killed a third-and-3 situation near midfield. Neither drive yielded points. Cal, meanwhile, never made it past Texas’ 46.

FOURTH QUARTER

Final. Cal 50, Texas 43 — Foreman’s 47-yard touchdown burst gave Texas the lead again at 40-35, but Cal ended up taking a 43-40 lead after a short touchdown run by Webb and a successful 2-point run from Hansen. Domingue tied it, but the Webb-to-Hansen connection put Cal up 50-43 with 3:41 left. Texas’ last drive sputtered, and it led to the final-drive dramatics that saw Cal’s Enwere drop the ball just before crossing the goal line — only to see officials award it to Cal at Texas’ 1 because they’d blown the whistle before Dylan Haines picked the ball up in the end zone.

Texas: Foreman 47-yard run (Domingue kick), 13:28

The drive: 1-47-:9

Cal: Webb 1-yard run (Hansen 2-point run), 10:45

The drive: 9-76-2:38; Key play: Cal converted a fourth-and-1 in Texas territory.

Texas: Domingue 35-yard field goal, 5:29

The drive: 12-59-5:10; Key play: Texas converted a third-and-9 play after a replay review. It was a catch by Devin Duvernay.

Cal: Hansen 12-yard pass from Webb (Anderson kick), 3:41

The drive: 7-65-1:48; Key play: Webb hit Jordan Veasy for a 30-yard gain to UT’s 35.
