Texas senior golfer Sophia Schubert defeated Chia Yen Wu of Chinese Taipei 2 up Saturday to advance to the final of the U.S. Women’s Amateur in Chula Vista, Calif.
By virtue of making the final, Schubert has guaranteed herself an entry into the 2018 U.S. Women’s Open.
“It means so much,” Schubert said. “Standing on the first tee this morning, seeing those trophies out there and hearing that if I win today, I’ll get to play in the Open, that just means everything because that’s what I’ve worked for my whole life.”
Schubert faced a unique competitor in Wu, who is just 13 years old and defeated Lauren Stephenson in 30 holes Friday.
The Texas senior will face Albane Valenquela of Stanford Sunday at 9 a.m. The two will play 36 holes for the title.
Should the honorable mention All-American win on Sunday she’ll be the first Longhorn to take the U.S. Women’s Amateur in over 20 years. Kelli Kuehne won back-t0-back in 1995 and 1996.
