Yuya Ito takes upset win at World University Games

It took three sets, but Yuya Ito advanced to the round of 16 at the World University Games with a three-set, upset win on Wednesday. The UT sophomore is representing Japan at the competition in Taipei City, Taiwan.

Ito defeated Hong Chung 7-6 (3), 5-7, 7-5 in a tight match with the fourth-seeded player out of Korea.

Chung ranks 511th in ATP world singles while Ito sits at 1,870th. Ito won despite being the 30th seed.


The Texas sophomore will take on Logan Staggs of the United States on Friday in the round of 16.

On the women’s side, Texas senior Dani Wagland fell to top-seeded Kai-Chen Chang of Chinese Taipei, 6-0, 6-0.

The senior for UT represents Australia and won 6-0, 6-0 over Josefina Surraco of Argentina on Tuesday.
