Six Longhorns advanced to the second round of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C., on Friday. Furman University is hosting the event.
“To win all six of our singles matches today, that’s as encouraging of a start to the year as we could have hoped for,” UT coach Howard Joffe said. “It’s not so much from perspective of the winning, but of the quality of players we were able to defeat today from the likes of Vanderbilt, Ohio State, Tennessee and others.”
Petra Granic topped Anna Vrbenska 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 to advance to the semifinals of the flight one women’s singles.
Bojana Markovic won 6-1, 6-4 in her college debut as she defeated Ari Riley of Tennessee. Markovic will compete in the flight two singles semifinals.
Longhorn Katie Poluta defeated Amanda Meyer of Vanderbilt 6-2, 6-4 in flight three to move on.
Freshman Marta Perez-Mur, Dani Wagland and Chelsea Crovetti also advanced to the semifinals of their flights.
