It took double overtime, but the Texas Longhorns soccer team remained the lone undefeated and untied team in the country with a 3-2 win over Texas Tech Friday night. The win tied the program record of 11 straight victories.
Cyera Hintzen scored her second goal of the game in the 101st minute, assisted by Kayra Dollas, to claim the win for Texas (11-0-0, 3-0-0 Big 12). It was her seventh goal on the year.
Hintzen scored the would-be game winner in the 79th minute, but substitute Jade King scored in the 88th minute to force overtime.
Nicole Curry came up big for the Longhorns in net. She made 10 saves on the night as the Red Raiders peppered her with 12 shots on goal.
Texas proved to be slightly more efficient, scoring its three goals on just eight shots on frame.
Haley Berg, a freshman, cashed in on her fourth goal of the season to give Texas a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Berg scored from 15 yards out after getting around her defender.
Gwennie Puente tied the game in the 40th minute scoring off a save that got away from Curry. It was her second goal of the season.
Hintzen’s first goal of the night was a highlight from 25 yards away. She led Texas with eight shots, three of them on goal. Alexa Adams was second on the team with two shots on goal.
The Longhorns soccer team next travels to Norman, Okla. to take on the Sooners Sunday at noon. They’ll try to extend the program’s best start to the season.
