Setter Ashley Shook snags first Big 12 award as Texas holds steady in AVCA poll

Posted October 2nd, 2017

A big week set Texas setter Ashley Shook up for some recognition from the Big 12.

Shook was honored on Monday as the Big 12’s freshman of the week. In last week’s sweeps of Baylor and Kansas State, Shook contributed 69 assists and 19 digs. Shook, a 6-1 Illinois native, also recorded four kills and four blocks.

Shook is averaging 10.2 assists per set this year. That ranks fifth in the Big 12 and 75th nationally.

Shook’s award means that half of Texas’ 2017 recruiting class has won half of the conference’s weekly freshman awards. Outside hitter Lexi Sun was recognized on Sept. 4 and Sept. 11.

Texas (11-3) also remained ranked fifth in the AVCA’s national poll on Monday. Florida, Stanford and Penn State are still the poll’s three top-ranked teams, but Nebraska replaced Minnesota in the fourth slot. UT is off until it travels to TCU on Oct. 8.
