Longhorns tennis players advance at ITA All-American Championships

Yuya Ito and Harrison Scott advanced to the main doubles draw at the ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday.

The duo defeated John McNally and J.J. Wolf of Ohio State 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6) in the qualifying round of 16.

Ito and Scott are both qualified for the singles and doubles main draw.


Another pair of Longhorns attempted to advance to the singles main draw Tuesday. Leonardo Telles and Rodrigo Banzer both competed in the qualifying round of 64.

Telles defeated Mathieu Scaglia of Oklahoma State 7-6 (5), 6-4. Banzer fell to Aleks Kovacevic of Illinois 6-3, 6-7 (14), 6-3.

In the round of 32 Telles fell to Ferran Calvo of Oklahoma 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (6).

Colin Markes and Adrian Ortiz tried to advance to the doubles main draw but were topped by a duo from Virginia Tech. Mitch Harper and Henrik Korsgaard defeated the Texas team 3-6, 7-5 (5), 1-0 (10-6).

On Monday, Banzer and Telles each won their singles matches in the qualifying round of 128.

Banzer defeated Grayson Goldin of South Florida 6-2, 6-4 while Telles topped Luis Erlenbusch of Tulane 6-7, 7-5, 7-6 (9).

A pair of doubles teams representing Texas also won matches Monday in the rounds of 64 and 32.

Markes and Ortiz defeated the team from UAB 6-2, 6-3 before beating Raheel Manji and Keivon Tabrizi of Indiana 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8).

Ito and Scott won 6-2, 6-2 over Dylan King and Ziqi Wang of Yale. Then they defeated Zvonimir Babic and Gustav Hansson of Mississippi 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (10-8).

In women’s action, sophomore Petra Granic came up short at the ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palicades, Calif. on Tuesday.

She fell to Makenna Jones of North Carolina 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the round of 64 qualifying draw.
