Texas women’s tennis advances five at ITA Texas Regional

The Texas women’s tennis team had five Longhorns advance to the third round of the singles draw at the ITA Texas Regional Championships Friday in Fort Worth.

Bianca Turati, Bojana Markovic, Katie Poluta, Petra Granic and Anna Turati all advanced out of the round of 64.

“Today was an excellent day for the ladies,” said Texas head coach Howard Joffe. “We still have a lot of tennis ahead, and hopefully the ladies will be ready to go once again tomorrow.”


Turati, ranked 24th, defeated Sveva Mazzari of Houston 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. She was the top seed in the regional and faces Anna Bowtell of Rice in the third round Saturday.

Markovic made quick work of Livia Kraus of Baylor, 6-0, 6-1. The Texas freshman is set to take on Nidal Kamal of Stephen F. Austin in the third round.

Poluta picked up her second win of the day with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Michaela Haet of Rice. Poluta will face Meredith Roberts on Saturday.

Granic won 6-2, 6-2 over Louise Trigona of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Granic faces Texas Tech’s Alexandra Angyalosy Saturday.

Bianca Turati’s sister, Anna, defeated Lusine Chobanyan of Sam Houston St. 6-1, 6-0. Anna Turati faces Riley McQuaid of Texas A&M Saturday.

Earlier, Poluta defeated Joy Ming Ming Chia of Texas State 6-0, 6-0 while Marta Perez-Mur topped Kristina Sorokolet of Baylor 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 128.

Perez Mur fell in the round of 64 to Alexandra Zenovka of TCU.

Chelsea Crovetti fell to Priya Niezgoda of Rice and Dani Wagland was bested by Sofie Moenster of Rice in the round of 128.
