The Texas women’s tennis team had eight wins and advanced multiple players and teams at the ITA Texas Regional Championships Saturday in Fort Worth.
Bianca Turati, Bojana Marcovic, Petra Granic and Anna Turati all won their round-of-32 matches.
“The Longhorns certainly performed well today,” said UT head coach Howard Joffe. “Without question, tomorrow will be more demanding and the hope is that they take the confidence from today into tomorrow.”
Bianca Turati, ranked No. 24, defeated Anna Bowtell of Rice 6-2, 6-1. Her twin sister, Anna, topped Riley McQuaid of Texas A&M 6-0, 6-0. The top-seeded Turati will face Liza Buss of SMU in the round of 16. Anna Turati will face Wendy Zhang of Rice on Sunday.
Markovic topped Nidal Kamal of Stephen F. Austin 6-1, 6-1 while Granic won 6-2, 6-3 over Alexandra Angyalosy. Markovic is set to face Maria Kononova of North Texas in the round of 16. Granic takes on Angie Shakhraichuk of Baylor on Sunday.
In doubles action, Marta Perez-Mur and Dani Wagland advanced, as did Granic and Anna Turati. Perez-Mur and Wagland bested Minying Liang and Nidhi Surapaneni of North Texas 8-4 in the round of 16. Earlier they defeated Dorthea Hviding and Riley McQuaid of Texas A&M 8-4. They’ll compete in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
Granic and Anna Turati topped Tiffany Hollebeck and Nicole Petchey of SMU 8-5 in the round of 16. They beat Sarah Adams and Nino Memishishi of Abilene Christian 8-2 in the previous round. They’ll start Sunday’s action at 10 a.m.
