Six men’s tennis players advance at ITA Texas Regional

Six men’s tennis players advanced to the round of 32 at the ITA Texas Regional Championships in College Station on Friday. Two doubles teams reached the quarterfinals.

Top-seeded Harrison Scott had a bye and then defeated Roy Stepanov of Lamar 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 64. Scott will face Joao Ceolin of UTSA in the round of 32.

Leonardo Telles also won his round of 64 match following a bye. He topped Hendrik Karsten of SMU 6-2, 6-4. Telles is set to take on Alexander Sendegeya of Texas Tech in the next round.


Rodrigo Banzer defeated Nikolas Moceanu of Abilene Christian 6-2, 6-3 to qualify for the round of 32. Banzer will face Petro Nuez of UT-Arlington in the next round.

Colin Markes bested Elliot Johnstone 6-1, 6-4 to advance. He’ll face Gabriel Evans of Incarnate Word Saturday.

Adrian Ortiz also took a straight-sets win, defeating Nicolas Mayr 6-4, 6-1. Ortiz takes on Jonathan Sheehy of Abilene Christian Saturday.

John Mee made it six qualifiers with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Roberto Rosales of SMU. He faces Artem Kapshuk of Texas Tech in the next round.

Banzer and Telles qualified for the doubles quarterfinals with two wins Friday. They topped a team from TCU 8-2 before defeating a duo from Abilene Christian 8-5.

Markes and Ortiz also qualified for the doubles quarterfinals. They defeated teams from UT-Arlington and Abilene Christian to advance.

Action at the ITA Texas Regional resumes Saturday.
