Breaking: Texas beats Stetson 95-59 in season opener
The Longhorns are 40-4 in home openers

Junior guard Lashann Higgs scored a career-high 18 points and Brooke McCarty 14 to lead Texas to a 95-59 victory over Stetson in the women’s basketball opener Sunday afternoon at the Erwin Center.
Texas is 40-4 in home openers. Junior forward Jordan Hosey had one of her best games as a Longhorn, scoring 13 points to go along with seven rebounds. Transfer center Jatarie White lead all rebounders with nine.
Texas set a team record with 33 points in the first quarter, the most points scored in any quarter since the NCAA adopted the quarter system in 2015.
Using a press, the Longhorns jumped on the Hatters early, forcing 12 points in the first half. With Higgs scoring 14 points, Texas led at halftime 57-33.
Senior guard Ariel Atkins set a career record with six assists. She finished with nine points.
It was a rough debut for UT’s three freshmen. Rellah Booth, Chasity Patterson and Destiny Littleton combined for four points on 2-for-18 shooting.
The next game for Texas will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday against McNeese State at the Erwin Center. About 5,000 school children from area schools will attend the game.
