The Dotted Line: Week 2 guide to watching Texas commits in action

Posted September 6th, 2018

The second week of high school football in Texas kicks off on Thursday. Texas’ entire 15-man 2019 recruiting class is in action, just like last week. Six out-of-state commitments are already multiple games into their seasons; Californians De’Gabriel Floyd and Chris Adimora are both 3-0, as is Jake Smith and his Notre Dame Prep team from Arizona.

Here’s a look at where to find the Texas commits in action this week.

Conroe Oak Ridge offensive tackle Tyler Johnson at practice. (Mike Craven)

The out-of-state commits

Westlake Village (Calif.) vs. St. Francis (Calif.)

Where: Westlake Village High School (Calif.)

When: Friday, 7 p.m. Pacific

Commits: De’Gabriel Floyd, four-star outside linebacker (Westlake Village)

Westlake Village is 3-0. Floyd returned a punt for a touchdown two weeks ago and recorded a receiving touchdown last week, proving his athleticism isn’t lacking despite gaining muscle over the past season. No defensive statistics are available for Westlake Village.

Mayfair (Calif.) at Santa Margarita (Calif.)

Where: Lakewood (Calif.)

When: Friday, 7 p.m. Pacific

Commits: Chris Adimora, four-star safety (Mayfair)

Mayfair and Adimora, a four-star safety commit, started the season with a 3-0 record and are set for a showdown on Friday with Santa Margarita. Adimora stars on both sides of the ball for Mayfair, patrolling the secondary at safety and contributing at wide receiver.

Chandler (Ariz.) vs. Faith Lutheran (Nev.)

Where: Henderson (Nev.)

When: Friday, 5 p.m. Western

Commits: Brayden Liebrock, four-star tight end (Chandler)

Chandler is on a two-game winning streak entering its second neutral site game of the season. Chandler started with a loss to Centennial (Calif.) in a neutral-site game and hopes to fare better this weekend as part of the Polynesian Classic just south of Las Vegas. The event also features IMG Academy from Florida and a total of four games over two days.

Notre Dame Prep (Ariz.) at Apollo (Ariz.)

Where: Scottsdale (Ariz.)

When: Friday, 7 p.m. Mountain

Commits: Jake Smith, four-star wide receiver (Notre Dame)

Jake Smith is off to the hottest start of any UT commit. The future slot receiver plays all over the field for his 3-0 Notre Dame Prep squad. He’s scored 11 of the first 12 touchdowns for the program this season and added another receiving touchdown in the most recent win.

Grayson (Ga.) vs. Marietta (Ga.)

Where: Grayson High School

When: Friday, 7:30 p.m. Eastern

Commits: Kenyatta Watson II, four-star cornerback (Grayson)

Grayson waltzed through Tucker in a nationally-televised game against Tucker in Week 1, but the national power suffered a setback against in-state rival Bergen Catholic. Watson wasn’t tested much in the first two games.

Wekiva (Fla.) vs. Winter Park (Fla.)

Where: Wekiva High School

When: Friday, 7 p.m. Eastern

Commits: Marcus Tillman Jr., three-star outside linebacker (Wekiva)

Wekiva allowed just three points in its season opening victory against in-state rival Jones High. Wekiva won 28-14 in a neutral site game against North Gwinnett (Ga.) last weekend. It’s back to in-state competition in Week 3 for the undefeated squad.

Millwood (Okla.) vs. Douglas (Okla.)

Where: Douglas High School

When: Saturday, 1 p.m. Central

Commits: Demariyon Houston, four-star wide receiver (Millwood)

Millwood is the defending Class 2A state champions and looks like a team ready to compete after starting the season with a win against Heritage Hall, Oklahoma’s defending Class 4A state champion. It was a slow game for Houston as Millwood did its damage on the ground.

The 2020 commitment

Lake Travis at Mansfield Summit

Where: R.L. Anderson Stadium

When: 7:30 p.m., Friday

Commits: Hudson Card, four-star quarterback (Lake Travis)
