Meet the Longhorns: Defensive end T’Vondre Sweat wants to prove doubters wrong

Posted December 19th, 2018

T’Vondre Sweat, defensive end, Huntsville

Huntsville junior defensive lineman T’Vondre Sweat (99) burst through the Tomball Memorial offensive line and makes a beeline toward Wildcats starting quarterback Dru Baker. (Gene Schallenberg/Huntsville Item)

FYI: 6-3/249; 3 stars; No. 46-ranked strong side defensive end

Fabulous 55 ranking: 23

Committed: Feb. 28

Scouting report: It’s rare to consider a Texas commit underrated. The Longhorn bump is well known in recruiting circles. Most of the commits at the elite-level schools get the benefit of the doubt and reach four-star status if the production matches the offer sheet. That’s not true for Sweat. He’s an underrated recruit with a chip on his shoulder.

Sweat is the ideal fit for the odd-man front preferred by Texas defensive coordinator Todd Orlando. He’s not exactly a defensive end or a defensive tackle. He’s a defensive lineman that Texas can employ in numerous ways. He’s a big-bodied defensive end in the mold of Malcolm Roach. He’s ranked No. 22 on the 2019 Fabulous 55.

Location and a lack of exposure hurt Sweat’s recruiting stock. Huntsville isn’t East Texas or the Houston-area. He also didn’t attend some of the major camps. Sweat isn’t built for football in shorts. He excels on the field and is an all-district performer who can contribute heavily early in his career.
