Meet the Longhorns: De’Gabriel Floyd wants to be the next best linebacker

FYI: 6-2/245; 4 stars; No. 64-ranked player in class

Fabulous 55 ranking: N/A

Committed: March 31

Scouting report: Texas found a unique talent when Tom Herman returned to his California roots to pull Floyd to the Lone Star State. Floyd would be considered the top inside linebacker in Texas for the 2019 cycle. He’s a freakish athlete who formerly played safety and hasn’t lost much speed or explosion since adding weight since his sophomore season. Floyd was a standout at The Opening Finals and a real recruiter for the Longhorns throughout his cycle.

Players like Gary Johnson and Anthony Wheeler will be out of eligibility by the time the 2019 class arrives on campus and Texas expects Ayodele Adeoye to take the place of Johnson. That will leave the Rover spot open for competition when Floyd arrives and he’ll be expected to compete for the starting spot, or at least provide help on the two-deep, as a freshman.

Floyd is the caliber of player who doesn’t redshirt in the modern game. Texas will find a way to incorporate him into the defense or the special teams from day one.
