Scouting report: Washington catches everything thrown in his radius. He’s a tall, lanky wide receiver who can contort his body and uses his hands to catch passes instead of letting the ball reach his body. Washington recorded a verified vertical of 32 inches and a shuttle of 4.28 at The Opening Final. He’s a crisp route-runner who knows how to create just enough separation to find the football when defenders can’t. Washington isn’t a burner, but he’s fast enough to get vertical on defenses.
Crafty might be the best word to describe Washington. He’s not the biggest or the fastest wide receiver in the country, but he understands his position more than most prep wide receivers. His body control is outstanding, and he might be the best pure pass catcher Texas has added since Tom Herman took over as head coach.
Wide receiver is a tough position to make an impact at as a freshman because of the complexity of the position in college compared to high school. Combination routes and the responsibilities as a blocker tend to prove hard to pick up for young wide receivers. Instead of a consistent role, expect Texas to find a way to mix him into the occasional set in the same way the Longhorns have used true freshmen Joshua Moore, Brennan Eagles and D’Shawn Jamison.
