Texas 28, Georgia 21: The expanded Sugar Bowl boxscore

Posted January 1st, 2019

How it all happened Tuesday night in New Orleans:

First quarter

Texas 10, Georgia 0. The Longhorns couldn’t have asked for a stronger opening. Sam Ehlinger completed all five of his passes on the opening drive and produced his 14th rushing score of the season, the first UT quarterback with 14 scores since Vince Young in 2004. Texas had 101 yards of offense; Georgia had 8 and produced one mistake after another — a 52-yard punt that was taken away because the punter’s knee had touched the turf on the snap, then an 11-yard shaked punt, and then a lost fumble inside the 15.

Texas: Sam Ehlinger 2-yard run (Cameron Dicker kick, 10:35)

Texas: Dicker 37-yard field goal (6:05)

Second quarter

Halftime: Texas 20, Georgia 7. The Longhorns got a huge break when Gerald Wilbon pounced on a fumble deep in Bulldogs territory at the end of the first quarter. Ehlinger scored on the opening play of the second, setting a school record with his 15th touchdown run. All 20 of Texas’ first-half points were scored by Austin-area products; Ehlinger is from Westlake, Dicker is from Lake Travis.

Texas: Ehlinger 9-yard run (Dicker kick, 14:53)

Georgia: Brian Herrien 17-yard pass from Jake Fromm (Rodrigo Blankenship kick, 9:03)

Texas: Dicker 30-yard field goal, 4:37

Third quarter

Texas 20, Georgia 7. The Longhorns opened the second half with an onside kick. Georgia recovered, which set them up with great field position. But P.J. Locke III had Tom Herman’s back, thwarting a promising Bulldogs drive with his third career interception. Texas went scoreless in the quarter (so did Georgia), but it ended with UT going for it on fourth-and-1 at Georgia’s 13. Ehlinger converted the first down.

Fourth quarter

Final: Texas 28, Georgia 21. Talk about a game of inches. Ehlinger bulled his way to another touchdown on four straight runs to open the quarter, his fourth-and-goal effort having to be reviewed. It put UT up by three touchdowns, thanks to a two-point conversion. The Bulldogs tried to hurry things up and did score two touchdowns to make it an onside kick finish, but they used their final timeout with 4:20 still to go. The Longhorns just kept moving the chains, though.

Texas: Ehlinger 1-yard run (Collin Johnson catch, 11:49)

Georgia: Mecole Hardman 3-yard pass from Fromm (Blankenship kick, 10:25)

Georgia: D’Andre Swift 5-yard pass from Fromm (Blankenship kick, :14)
