The Dotted Line: Prince Dorbah, Chris Thompson Jr. talk Texas interest

Texas’ five commitments in the 2020 class play offense. Two defensive prospects trending toward the Longhorns are four-star safety Chris Thompson Jr. and four-star defensive end Prince Dorbah. Both participated at the Under Armour camp in Dallas last weekend and indicated that Texas is leading the pack at this stage in the recruitment process.

Dorbah is a 6-2, 210-pound menace off the edge. He plays defensive end at Highland Park, starting for the Class 5A Division I champions the past two years. He was his district’s newcomer of the year as a sophomore and an all-district performer as a junior.

He’s currently in a playoff run with the Highland Park basketball team, but still managed to stop by the camp and dominate offensive linemen in 1-on-1 drills. He ranks No. 28 on the Fabulous 55.

“Texas is leading the way right now. They’ve probably recruited me the hardest and we’re on good terms right now,” Dorbah said. “Texas is building something special up there and it’ll be fun to watch in the near future.”

And what separates Texas from the pack at this point?

“I’m treated like family by the whole staff.”

Dorbah is an intriguing prospect because of his versatility. He’s not big enough to play as an end in Texas’ preferred odd-man front. That means he’s likely to move to B-Backer and play off the edge without his hand on the ground if he picks Texas. That doesn’t concern Dorbah.

“It’s important to play multiple positions and get plugged into different spots depending on what the offense is doing,” he said. “I’d be coming off the edge and playing in space at times in coverage.”

Dorbah’s duties on the basketball court prevent him from attending as many campuses as some other top prospects. He’s further behind in his recruitment and doesn’t plan to release his top schools until the summer before deciding during the season. That could always change once his schedule clears.

“I’ll do more visits once basketball is over,” he said.

Thompson is another versatile defender on Texas’ wish list. The 6-2, 195-pound prospect played outside linebacker for Duncanville for much of his junior season. He sees himself as a potential replacement to Caden Sterns if he winds up in burnt orange.

“I’d play some nickel, but mostly deep safety,” Thompson said. “Kind of how Caden Sterns is playing.”

Thompson is the No. 12-ranked player on the Fab 55 and one of two targets from Duncanville in the 2020 class, joining top-ranked athlete Ja’Quinden Jackson. The Longhorns possess an inside track at Duncanville thanks to a family tie. Texas’ assistant receivers coach, Rashaad Samples, is the son of legendary Duncanville head coach, Reggie Samples.

“Texas is pretty much at the top right now. The relationship I have with coach (Craig) Naivar and Rashaad Samples, as well as the one with coach Herman (is the reason),” Thompson said. “Samples is like a big brother to me. He’s guided me through this process.”

Thompson mentioned Clemson and LSU as the main threats to Texas. He might visit Notre Dame and Ohio State and isn’t clear on when he’ll pick a school. He does know what he’s looking for, however.

“I want a school that is authentic with me, be around people I can trust, a great education and a defense that fits me.”
