The Dotted Line: A summer update to the American-Statesman’s 2020 Fabulous 55

Posted June 3rd, 2019

The top three players on the American-Statesman’s 2020 Fabulous 55 remains unchanged with five-star running back Zachary Evans leading the class. The Galena Park North Shore star is also considered the top prospect in the country. Evans is followed by Duncanville athlete Ja’Quinden Jackson and Tomball wide receiver Demond Demas. Demas, a long-time pledge to Texas A&M, is the highest-rated commit on the list with Evans and Jackson still deciding.

The top five is rounded out by Houston Clear Creek offensive tackle Chad Lindberg (No. 4) and Cibolo Steele cornerback Jaylon Jones (No. 5), who is committed to A&M. Jones and Demas are the only two A&M commitments on the list, though that should change with the Aggies in hot pursuit of a handful of uncommitted Fab 55 members.

Four out of the five Texas commits made the list with Port Neches-Groves offensive lineman Jaylen Garth moving up to No. 11 after an incredible spring. Garth reshaped his body, eliminating bad weight with budding strength in the weight room to move up the rankings. Lake Travis quarterback Hudson Card isn’t too far behind at No. 15. Card is in a competition with Malik Hornsby (No. 16) and Haynes King (No. 18) for the distinction of top quarterback in the state. Hornsby is committed to Mack Brown and North Carolina.

Texas offensive line commitments Logan Parr (No. 24) and Jake Majors (No. 27) are also on the list. Oklahoma and LSU also hold four commitments on the Fab 55. Oklahoma’s top pledge is Aledo running back Jase McClellan, who checks in at No. 7. LSU’s top pledges are defensive end Alec Bryant (No. 21) and offensive tackle Courtland Ford (No. 22).

Half of the Fab 55’s top 10 prospects are already committed. In total, 26 of the 55 prospects were committed before June started. That number should grow by one on Monday with Ja’Quinden Jackson expected to announce his college decision. The advent of the early signing period and the ability of juniors to take official visits in the spring quickened an already fast recruiting process.

Out-of-state programs are doing great in Texas. Of the 26 current commits on the list, 19 are headed out of state to programs like Oklahoma, LSU and Ohio State. Alabama and Clemson even hold commitments from prospects in the top 10. The world is shrinking with easier travel options and social media. It’s easier than ever for programs thousands of miles away to remain in constant contact with a prospect and his family. This diminishes the proximity to home angle in-state schools used for decades.

The perception of the Big 12 outside of the football played at Texas and Oklahoma also hurt the state’s chances at keeping its best players. TCU is the only state program besides the Longhorns and Aggies to hold a commitment from a prospect on the list. The Horned Frogs continued their pipeline into Class 2A powerhouse Newton by landing a pledge from defensive end James Sylvester. Oklahoma State is the only other Big 12 school outside of Texas, Oklahoma and TCU to pick up a Fab 55 pledge and it came from offensive guard Trent Pullen, who checks in at No. 55.
