Texas notebook: Hampered by his hamstring, Collin Johnson could return against Oklahoma

Posted October 7th, 2019

Last December, Collin Johnson had a record-setting day against Oklahoma at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. The Texas wide receiver caught eight passes for 177 yards in the 39-27 loss. No player had ever recorded more receiving yards in a Big 12 title game.

The 11th-ranked Longhorns (4-1, 2-0 Big 12) and sixth-ranked Sooners (5-0, 2-0) meet again this week. And it looks like Johnson — who has missed the Rice, Oklahoma State and West Virginia games — may be available for a rematch with the OU secondary.

The Longhorns expect Johnson to play, UT coach Tom Herman said Monday. Johnson practiced on Sunday.

A month ago, Johnson answered in the affirmative when he was asked if his hamstring had been bothering against LSU. Two days later, he was designated as a game-time decision for the Rice game. He sat against the Owls and then spent the Oklahoma State and West Virginia contests on the sideline.

Herman believes that Johnson may have hurt himself while extending for a catch on Louisiana Tech’s sideline in the Aug. 31 season opener. The injury was initially thought to be minor, but Johnson suffered a setback on the Sunday ahead of the Oklahoma State game. He received a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injection soon thereafter.

“We knew that the PRP injection would prolong the short-term recovery, but hopefully extend the long-term recovery, meaning that he would be able to, once he does see the field again, hopefully not feel any residual effects or not be 90 or 80 percent, but truly be 100 percent when he got back,” Herman said.

Johnson has seven catches for 108 yards and a touchdown this season. He ranks eighth in career receptions at UT (157), ninth in receiving yards (2,173) and 11th in touchdown catches (13). In four career games against the Soners, he has 19 catches and has averaged 17.3 yards per reception.

Other injuries: Herman said tight end Cade Brewer did not suffer a concussion in the West Virginia game. Both he and safety Chris Brown (thigh contusion) will “progress into practice” this week, he said. Sophomore safety DeMarvion Overshown (back) ran well on Sunday and should participate in Tuesday’s practice. Freshman running back Jordan Whittington (sports hernia) is still listed as doubtful.

Applause for Roschon: Freshman Roschon Johnson was named the Big 12’s newcomer of the week on Monday. He rushed for 121 yards in the 42-31 win at West Virginia. It was his first 100-yard rushing game as a Longhorn and the most for a UT running back since Chris Warren III rushed for 166 yards against San Jose State in 2017.

It was the second time a Texas player has been recognized by the  Big 12. Receiver Devin Duvernay split the offensive player of the week award with Baylor’s Denzel Mims following a his 12-catch, two-touchdown performance against LSU on Sept. 7.

The West Virginia game was a breakout moment for Johnson. The four-star freshman signed as a quarterback but a spat of running back injuries forced a position change. Averaging 4.9 yards per carry, he’s Texas’ second-leading rusher.

Sooner six-pack: This Saturday will be the sixth Texas-OU game in John Burt’s career. The senior wide receiver redshirted in 2018, having played only four games. Two of them, however, were the two Texas-Oklahoma games.

Burt has five career catches against the Sooners. His 2018 catch against OU in their October matchup ended up being his only reception of the season. He has started three games this season and has two catches, including a 13-yard touchdown at West Virginia.
