TCU 37, No. 15 Texas 27: The expanded boxscore

Posted October 26th, 2019

How it all happened Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium in Fort Worth:

First quarter

Texas 3, TCU 3. For only the second time this season, the Horns forced an opening-drive punt. TCU’s Max Duggan threw his first pick of the season on the second drive, but Sam Ehlinger returned the favor soon after. It was his fourth of the season, and it led to a field goal. On Cameron Dicker’s, Tom Herman opted for the chip-shot field goal over a fourth-and-1 at TCU’s 3. Last week, the Horns failed on two fourth-and-2s against Kansas.

Texas: Cameron Dicker 21-yard field goal (6:32)

TCU: Jonathan Song 32-yard field goal (2:25)

Second quarter

Halftime: Texas 17, TCU 13. The Horned Frogs took their first lead of the game on a Duggan touchdown pass, but the Longhorns responded with a pair of Ehlinger scores. But at the very end of the half, Texas’ decision to ice TCU’s freshman kicker misfired when his 52-yard miss was taken away; he made it on his second try. Texas left five points off the scoreboard — a 26-yard missed field goal (the shortest miss of Dicker’s career) and an escaped sack for a safety by Malcolm Roach.

TCU: Pro Wells 24-yard pass from Max Duggan (Song kick, 12:18)

Texas: Devin Duvernay 47-yard pass from Sam Ehlinger (Dicker kick, 10:57)

Texas: Keaontay Ingram 17-yard pass from Ehlinger (Dicker kick, 1:11)

TCU: Griffin Kell 52-yard field goal (:00)

Third quarter

TCU 27, Texas 20. Big plays dominated the quarter. Duvernay’s 63-yard catch set up a field goal and Taye Barber’s 51-yard catch led to a TCU touchdown and Jalen Reagor’s 44-yarder put the Horned Frogs up for the second time in the game. Ehlinger threw two interceptions, including one on the final play of the quarter that would lead to a TCU field goal.

Texas: Dicker 38-yard field goal (7:46)

TCU: Sewo Olonilua 1-yard run (Song kick, 5:30)

TCU: Jalen Reagor 44-yard pass from Duggan (Song kick, 4:17)

Fourth quarter

Final: TCU 37, Texas 27. The Frogs, trailing 20-13 in the third, scored 17 unanswered points to go up 30-20 early in the fourth. Roschon Johnson, who hadn’t been much of a factor up to that point, converted a key first down catch and also scored to make it a 30-27 game. But TCU converted a key third-and-11 with six minutes left and — the real killer — a third-and-14 desperation heave to Barber for 36 yards with 2:30 left. Duggan’s touchdown keeper on the next play was the dagger. For good measure, Ehlinger threw his fourth pick of the day on Texas’ final drive.

TCU: Song 33-yard field goal (11:28)

Texas: Roschon Johnson 2-yard run (Dicker kick, 6:50)

TCU: Duggan 11-yard run (Song kick, 1:59)
