No. 14 Baylor 24, Texas 10: The expanded boxscore

Posted November 23rd, 2019

How it all happened Saturday in Waco:

1st quarter: Texas 0, Baylor 0

For the fourth straight game, Texas failed to score a touchdown in the first quarter. Of course, the Bears didn’t score either though they were driving as it ended. Texas picked up an early turnover when D’Shawn Jamison forced a fumble and Chris Brown recovered it. The Horns reached Baylor’s 39, but Tom Herman opted to punt on fourth-and-five rather than go for it or try a 56-yard field goal.

2nd quarter: Baylor 7, Texas 3 (halftime)

Cameron Dicker’s field goal was set up by an unexpected big play. With 18 seconds remaining, Texas faced a first down at its own 2, but Keaontay Ingram burst free for 68 yards down to Baylor’s 30. Dicker’s kick helped Texas avoid its first first-half shutout since 2015.

Baylor: John Lovett 28-yard run (John Mayers kick, 14:51)

Texas: Cameron Dicker 48-yard field goal (:00)

3rd quarter: Baylor 21, Texas 3

The Bears had two possessions in the quarter and scored touchdowns on both. Denzel Mims had a touchdown catch, but also hauled in a 16-yard pass on a fourth-and-5 play to keep the other touchdown drive alive. The Longhorns were held to 83 yards in the quarter and were stopped on fourth down at Baylor’s 39.

Baylor: Charlie Brewer 1-yard run (Mayers kick, 7:36)

Baylor: Denzel Mims 12-yard pass from Brewer (Mayers kick, 1:20)

4th quarter: Baylor 24, Texas 10

Don’t let the final score fool you. The Bears, who were 5.5-point favorites, looked two touchdowns better. There was a Daniel Young appearance for the Longhorns; he’s been a non-factor all season but saved this from being a 24-3 punctuation mark with a touchdown with one second left in the game. Sam Ehlinger was picked off for the seventh time in the last five games.

Baylor: Mayers 24-yard field goal (10:57)

Texas: Daniel Young 4-yard run (Dicker kick, :01)
