The Dotted Line: Jalen Milroe only half the quarterback equation for Texas in the 2021 cycle

Posted February 12th, 2020

Texas inked 19 players in the 2020 class, which ended last week with national signing day. Texas’ class ranked ninth in the nation and first in the Big 12. The Longhorns have more scholarships for the 2021 cycle and hope to land a top-five class.

As the coaching staff switches its full attention to 2021, we take a look at where the Longhorns stand at each position, starting at quarterback.

Katy Tompkins’ Jalen Milroe is Texas’ lone quarterback commit for the 2021 recruiting class — so far, anyway. (Mike Craven/American-Statesman)

Already on campus: Sam Ehlinger (sr. this fall), Casey Thompson (soph.)

2020 signees: Hudson Card (4 stars), Ja’Quinden Jackson (4)

2021 commitments: Jalen Milroe (4)

Top in-state targets: Sawyer Robertson (4), Lubbock Coronado; Garrett Mussmeier (4), Flower Mound Marcus; Preston Stone (4), Dallas Episcopal

Other offers: Jake Garcia (5), LA (Calif.) Narbonne

The simple truth in modern football is that quarterbacks will transfer as the deck shuffles following Ehlinger’s impending departure after the 2020 season. That leaves Thompson as the elder statesman to battle with young bucks like Card and Jackson for the starting spot in 2021. Roschon Johnson is staying at running back, which opened a scholarship for a quarterback in 2021.

Texas signed a pair of four-star quarterbacks in 2020 and the Longhorns want to repeat the same trick in the 2021 cycle. Tom Herman’s squad is halfway to that goal with Milroe locked in. The dual-threat from Katy Tompkins is a leader and a winner. He’s led Tompkins to its first two playoff appearances and is already leading the charge in recruiting, having helped Texas already land a couple of 2021 commitments from the Houston area.

Milroe committed before Texas had hired new offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. Texas has sent out two in-state offers to quarterbacks since he’s arrived, signaling the Longhorns’ intention to sign a pair of quarterbacks. Robertson, a Fabulous 55 member from Lubbock Coronado, and Nussmeier, a pro-style prospect from Flower Mound Marcus, earned UT offers in January and possess the big arm that Yurcich covets in his vertical passing game.

Stone, however, is already committed to SMU. And Garcia is pledged to USC.
