The Texas men’s tennis team completed its trip to the ITA National Indoor Championships with a second victory over a ranked team Sunday, beating No. 8 Stanford 4-2 at Madison, Wis.
The fourth-ranked Longhorns had beaten No. 16 UCLA on Friday before falling to No. 13 Michigan in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Texas took the doubles point to start its consolation match against the Cardinal on the right foot.
UT’s Jacob Bullard and Eliot Spizzirri edged Timothy Sah and Sangeet Sridhar 7-6 (4), and teammates Cleeve Harper and Yuya Ito topped Filip Kolasinski and Alex Rotsaert 6-4 to secure the point.
Stanford evened the match when Rotsaert, ranked No. 21, upset 12th-ranked Christian Sigsgaard in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Harper got the lead back for Texas by beating Kento Perera 6-4, 6-2.
Kolasinski’s 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Bullard knotted the match again at 2-2, but Chih Chi Huang upended No. 98 Neel Rajesh 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to put Texas within one win of the victory.
Ito, the second-ranked player in the nation, got it in a three-set battle with No. 16 Axel Geller, winning 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
The Longhorns will return to action Sunday at the Texas Tennis Center, facing Nebraska at 11 a.m. and UT-San Antonio at 3:30 p.m.
Stanford will get a rematch here Feb. 28.
