De’Gabriel Floyd fills a need at Rover

Texas’ defense is built to allow linebackers to run and make plays. The defensive line, usually in an odd-man front, is tasked with taking on blocks and freeing up space for speedsters at the second-level to roam and make tackles. Malik Jefferson excelled in the system under Todd Orlando in 2018, as did JUCO transfer Gary Johnson.

That success allowed the Longhorns to gain an out-of-state commitment last weekend from 4-star outside linebacker De’Gabriel Floyd. The 6-2, 220-pound 4-star Californian is the No. 3-ranked outside linebacker in the country and joins wide receiver Jordan Whittington, quarterback Roschon Johnson and defensive end T’Vondre Sweat in the 2019 class.

Floyd fell in love with Texas during a visit to Austin for a junior day. Another unofficial visit over the weekend sealed the deal and Floyd pledged to the Longhorns over offers from West Coast programs like USC, UCLA and Oregon. He’s the No. 40-ranked overall prospect in the 2019 class. Whittington remains Texas’ highest-rated commit at No. 30.

Floyd will attend The Opening Final in Frisco during the summer and is invited to participate in the Polynesian Bowl after his prep career ends. He played running back and linebacker as a junior, but expects to focus solely on defense as a senior.

At what age did you fall in love with football?

I first started playing at 6 and I think I became attached to it because of the physicality.

What made Texas your choice?

I love my teammates there. I love my coaches, the rest of the staff, it has the best facilities, best strength coach and I have family in Austin. … I can come and work to play right away. I can wear my number (1) and I love the state of Texas.

What are your goals as a senior?

This year I get to focus strictly on defense unless I’m needed to contribute somewhere else, but my goal this year at linebacker is to have 130 tackles, at least 15 tackles for loss, more interceptions and become a better leader.

What was most important to you as a recruit?

Learning not to please everyone else and to eliminate options that isn’t exactly what you want.

What were your initial thoughts of Tom Herman?

He is a caring, big-hearted guy who doesn’t play when it comes to business. I can’t wait for him to be my coach.

Where do you see yourself playing at Texas?

Rover, like the position Malik Jefferson played.

What artist would you most like to see live?

NBA Youngboy.

Favorite movie?

“Bright.”

Favorite athlete of all-time?

Bo Jackson.

Favorite sport to watch other than football?

Women’s beach volleyball.
