The fifth-ranked Texas men’s tennis team held off UT-San Antonio 4-3 after rolling past Nebraska 6-1 in a doubleheader Sunday at the Texas Tennis Center.
The Longhorns improved to 9-2 as sixth-ranked Christian Sigsgaard led the way with victories in both singles and doubles against the Roadrunners in the nightcap.
Sigsgaard and Chih Chi Huang teamed up to beat Sebastian Rodriguez and Joao Alcantra 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Eliot Spizzirri and Jacob Bullard wrapped up the point by topping Juri Reckow and Joao Ceolin 6-2.
Second-ranked Yuya Ito, Sigsgaard and Evin McDonald won their singles matches in straight sets, with Ito cruising past Kai Breitbach 6-3, 6-2; Sigsgaard thumping Rodriguez 6-1, 6-1; and McDonald beating Alcantra 6-1, 7-5.
UTSA’s singles winners were Reckow, 6-3, 6-2 over Cleeve Harper; Javier Rodriguez, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8) over Bullard; and Javier Gonzalez, 6-3, 6-2 over Nevin Arimilli.
Against the Cornhuskers in the opener, the Longhorns swept the doubles matches and took five singles victories in straight sets.
Sigsgaard and Ito beat Albert Sprlak-Puk and Andre Saleh 6-2 and Spizzirri and Bullard topped Patrick Cacciatore and William Gleason 6-3 to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Ito defeated Victor Moreno Lozano 6-2, 6-1; Siem Woldeab topped Gleason 6-0, 6-2; Spizzirri knocked off Sprlak-Puk 6-1, 6-1; Huang rolled over Saleh 6-0, 6-2; and McDonald beat Shunya Maruyama 6-4, 6-4. Nebraska’s only winner was Patrick Cacciatore, who topped Eshan Talluri 6-1, 7-5.
Texas will host No. 8 Stanford on Friday. The Longhorns beat the Cardinal 4-2 at the ITA National Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis., earlier this month.
