Story highlights
  • Four-star linebacker Ayodele Adeoye became commit No. 11 for Texas.
  • Four-star linebacker Ayodele Adeoye is one of five out-of-state 2018 commitments for Texas.
  • Four-star linebacker Ayodele Adeoye plays with the physicality Texas wants from a middle linebacker.

The future Texas defense is beginning to take shape. Four-star linebacker Ayodele Adeoye arrived on campus this weekend for an unofficial visit and left as a commitment. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound middle linebacker prospect is a national top 125 player and the No. 5 ranked middle linebacker prospect in the cycle, per 247Sports Composite.

Let’s get to know the Ritenour High School (Mo.) native more. He’s the 11th commitment in the cycle for Texas and the fifth on defense.

Skill set: Adeoye plays with the aggression and violence needed at middle linebacker. He’s an instinctual player who winds up around the football on most plays. The four-star prospect is playmaker at linebacker and is best when allowed to play downhill. He’s a tackle-to-tackle linebacker with enough speed to chase plays down to the outside. Adeoye prides himself on hard hits and physical plays. He’s strong enough to shed offensive lineman and athletic enough to blitz up the middle. His best trait is his ability to finish tackles. Adeoye doesn’t miss tackles once he gets hands on the runner and that’s the most important trait a middle linebacker can possess. He’ll need to improve in space as a coverage linebacker.

Immediate impact: Texas lacks elite middle linebacker prospects in the ranks. Junior Breckyn Hager and JUCO transfer Gary Johnson are expected to compete at the position in 2017. Both will be seniors by the time Adeoye arrives on campus. He’ll likely sit and learn behind the older duo as a young player before competing against 2017 signee Marqez Bimage for starting snaps by the 2019 season. The fastest way for Adeoye to make an immediate impact will likely come on special teams.

Fitting into the program: It used to be hard to project out-of-state prospects into the Texas program. Under previous staffs, most commitments came from within the state. Herman is showing no fear pursuing the top players on his board no matter his location. Texas now holds commitments from two out-of-state quarterbacks, a defensive end, a wide receiver and now a linebacker. Five of Texas’ 11 commitments play high school football outside of Texas. That should help players like Adeoye assimilate into the program. As a player, his hard-nosed approach to the position is exactly what defensive coordinator Todd Orlando wants in a middle linebacker.

Recruiting at the position: Texas is halfway done with the recruiting class, barring any de-commits. The Longhorns can sign around 20 prospects in the 2018 class and Adeoye is No. 11. The commitment list is expected to grow to 12 June 5 when five-star B.J. Foster announces his college decision. With Adeoye and Byron Hobbs in the fold, the defensive staff can now focus on positions like cornerback and defensive line.
