Texas softball wins opening games, schedules Texas State

Texas Longhorns celebrates their win over Wichita State during the Texas Classic last season. The Longhorns opened the season Sunday with two wins at the Scrap Yard Blizzard Challenge in Conroe.

After having its first 10 scheduled games of the season either canceled or postponed, Texas' softball team opened its season with a pair of wins in Conroe on Sunday and then on Monday announced the Longhorns have scheduled Texas State for Wednesday.

The seventh-ranked Longhorns shut out Wichita State 8-0 in a five-inning win at the Scrap Yard Blizzard Challenge in Conroe on Sunday, then beat North Texas 5-1 in the second game of the doubleheader.

Lauren Burke went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs in the win over Wichita State; Janae Jefferson added a triple and Colleen Sullivan hit a double and drove in two runs. Shannon Rhodes homered in the win over UNT while Sullivan hit a pair of doubles.

Shea O'Leary gave up one hit in the five-inning win over the Shockers. The sophomore had four strikeouts and walked three. And Molly Jacobsen, a graduate student transfer from Ole Miss, picked up her first victory as a Longhorn in relief, allowing two hits and no runs over 3.2 innings against North Texas.

Wednesday's game against Texas State will be at McCombs Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
