FIRST QUARTER

Texas 0, Texas Tech 0 — Senior nights can inspire or they can cripple, and early on, Texas’ seniors struggled. In their final Royal-Memorial Stadium game, Taylor Doyle (false start) and Alex De La Torre (blocking in the back) were penalized, and Daje Johnson dropped a pass on third down. Sophomore Tristan Nickelson also was flagged (holding) to wipe out a long catch by John Burt. Among the positives was Dylan Haines’ gift-wrapped interception on fourth down deep in Texas territory. No points in the opening quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

Halftime: Texas Tech 17, Texas 10 — Injuries piled up for the Longhorns, as quarterback Jerrod Heard (possible concussion), running back Kirk Johnson (leg), linebacker Malik Jefferson (ankle) and linebacker Peter Jinkens (knee) all had to leave the game, as did defensive end Naashon Hughes and defensive tackle Hassan Ridgeway. None of them returned. Backup quarterback Tyrone Swoopes tried to push the ball downfield but had little success; he overthrew a wide-open Lorenzo Joe for what might have gone for a touchdown, and under-threw to Marcus Johnson on a pass that was picked off by Tech’s Nigel Bethel.

Texas: Nick Rose 32-yard field goal, 14:56
The drive: 5 plays, 27 yards, 2:14
Key play: Kirk Johnson’s 32-yard run down the right sideline set UT up at Tech’s 9.

Texas Tech: Jakeem Grant 65-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes (Clayton Hatfield PAT), 14:28
The drive: 2 plays, 65 yards, :28
Key play: See above. Mahomes’ pass actually was nearly picked off, then bounced into Grant’s hands.

Texas Tech: Hatfield 51-yard field goal, 8:25
The drive: 7 plays, 29 yards, 2:22
Key play: Mahomes’ 13-yard run on the first play of the drive moved Tech to midfield.

Texas: Chris Warren 91-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 5:59
The drive: 1 play, 91 yards, :25
Key play: That was it. And Warren broke five tackles on the run, too.

Texas Tech: Mahomes 1-yard TD run (Hatfield PAT), 1:48
The drive: 5 plays, 34 yards, 1:20
Key play: A 16-yard scramble by Mahomes set Tech up at Texas’ 3.

THIRD QUARTER

Texas Tech 27, Texas 24 — UT play-caller Jay Norvell scrapped the deep ball and handed off to Warren, who notched his second and third touchdowns of the night. His second, a 21-yarder, was set up when John Bonney dug the ball free from Tech’s Ian Sadler and Charles Omenihu recovered. Warren’s third score, a 23-yarder, was set up by Johnson’s 54-yard kick return. After Devin Lauderdale beat Duke Thomas for a 59-yard gain, the UT defense held strong and a Naashon Hughes sack forced a field goal.

Texas Tech: DeAndre Washington 2-yard TD run (Hatfield PAT), 7:58
The drive: 12 plays, 91 yards, 3:34
Key play: On third-and-16 from UT’s 45, Mahomes hit Sadler for a long 31-yard pass.

Texas: Warren 21-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 5:47
The drive: 2 plays, 28 yards, :39
Key play: It was Bonney’s forced fumble and Omenihu’s recovery that set UT up at Tech’s 28.

Texas Tech: Hatfield 38-yard field goal, 2:55
The drive: 6 plays, 49 yards, 2:56
Key play: Mahomes’ 59-yard pass to Lauderdale set up the kick.

Texas: Warren 23-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 1:36
The drive: 4 plays, 40 yards, 1:08
Key play: Warren’s scoring run was the big play of the short drive.

FOURTH QUARTER

Final: Texas Tech 48, Texas 45 — The fourth quarter ended just as it began, with Tech nursing a 3-point lead. There were six scores, as Swoopes made big plays with his legs but came up short on one critical play Texas needed with his arm, a fourth-and-7 from UT’s own 45 with just over 2 minutes left. That failed conversion, coupled with Jakeem Grant’s 40-yard touchdown run on Tech’s ensuing drive, was a real killer.

Texas Tech: Washington 16-yard TD run (Hatfield PAT), 14:29
The drive: 7 plays, 75 yards, 2:07
Key play: Back-to-back runs by Justin Stockton and Mahomes netted 31 yards to close out the third quarter.

Texas: Swoopes 1-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 11:10
The drive: 8 plays, 77 yards, 3:19
Key play: Three plays before he scored, Swoopes converted a key third-and-2 with a 6-yard run to Tech’s 17.

Texas: Swoopes 46-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 7:54
The drive: 4 plays, 69 yards, 1:13
Key play: It was Swoopes’ scoring run, which came on a third-and-7 from Tech’s 46.

Texas Tech: Stockton 1-yard TD run (Hatfield PAT), 6:18
The drive: 6 plays, 75 yards, 1:36
Key play: Mahome’s 40-yard pass to Jakeem Grant set Tech up at the 1 — and made Grant the school’s career receiving yardage leader. (Move over, Michael Crabtree.)

Texas Tech: Grant 40-yard TD run (Hatfield PAT), 2:41
The drive: 1 play, 40 yards, :21
Key play: Texas’ failed fourth down conversion on the immediate play before was the key play of the game.

Texas: Warren 8-yard TD run (Rose PAT), 2:06
The drive: 2 plays, 24 yards, :30
Key play: Johnson’s big 42-yard kick return set UT up at Tech’s 39.
