The Eyes of Texas: Four players to watch in Saturday’s Longhorns-Wildcats game

The 18th-ranked Longhorns play at Kansas State on Saturday. The eyes of Texas will be upon …

Devin Duvernay, Texas receiver

Duvernay has only eight catches through the first four games. That still ranks third on the team, though, behind only Lil’Jordan Humphrey (21) and Collin Johnson (20). But it was Duvernay who scored the first touchdown of the season with a diving catch at Maryland. You don’t have to tell Kansas State about Duvernay’s highlight reel, however. Two years ago in Manhattan, he scored on an 80-yard catch at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.

Brandon Jones, Texas safety

Texas’ other safety — freshman Caden Sterns — earned the Big 12’s newcomer of the week award off his two-interception performance in the win over TCU. That may have overshadowed Jones’ own performance against the Horned Frogs. In the 31-16 win, he logged 10 tackles, one interception and a fumble recovery. Jones leads the team with 29 tackles despite missing the Tulsa game with an ankle injury.

Da’Quan Patton, Kansas State linebacker

Patton is Kansas State’s tackles leader with 22, nine of which came last week at West Virginia. The 6-1, 221-pounder redshirted last year after spending two seasons at Trinity Valley Community College, although Austin-area football fans probably remember him from his days at Vista Ridge High School. In 2014, Patton was an All-Central Texas honoree.

Isaiah Zuber, Kansas State receiver

Zuber was the Wildcats’ leading receiver in 2017 but is currently on this best run ever. The junior recorded his first career 100-yard game against UTSA on Sept. 15, then followed that up with a 133-yard performance last week against West Virginia. His 10 receptions in the 35-6 loss in Morgantown were a career high. He has scored three touchdowns this season.
