Posted July 1st, 2017

Former Longhorns Madisyn Cox and Clark Smith each earned berths to the FINA World Championships at the USA Swimming National Championships on Saturday in Indianapolis, Ind.

Cox earned a spot on Team USA in her last bid to make the squad. She finished the 200-meter individual medley in 2 minutes, 9.69 seconds to take second place for the opportunity to face the world’s best swimmers in Budapest, Hungary later this month. It’s the first time Cox has qualified for a long course, senior-level international meet.

The former All-American for Texas fought her way back from third place about halfway through the race. Cox moved into second after the breaststroke and had the fastest freestyle swim to finish 0.12 behind Melanie Margalis.

Clark Smith, who already qualified for two other World Championships events, earned his third berth after taking the 800 freestyle race in 7:50.43. He will also compete in the 800 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle at the World Championships.

The Olympic gold medalist in the 800 freestyle relay in 2016 will join Jack Conger and Townley Haas at the World Championships later this month.

Conger, a former Longhorn and Olympic gold medalist, will swim the 200 butterfly while Haas, another 2016 Olympic gold medalist and rising junior at Texas, will compete in the 200 freestyle along with the 400 and 800 freestyle relays.

Will Licon, another Texas ex, took sixth place in the 200 IM final with a time of 1:58.90. Texas rising junior, John Shebat, won the event’s consolation final in 1:59.70.
