Ryan Reynolds blasted a two-run homer in the third inning to give UT a 3-0 lead. The Longhorns then added two more runs in the fourth frame. McNeese State, however, cut its deficit down to one run by the seventh-inning stretch.
UT relievers Josh Sawyer and Andy McGuire, who started the game in right field, were able to keep McNeese State (10-18) scoreless over the final two innings. Junior Parker Joe Robinson, who relieved first-time starter Matthew Whelan in the fifth inning, earned the first win of his career.
Texas (18-12) won’t have much time to rest following Monday’s close call. On Tuesday, Texas will travel to Corpus Christi to play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Whataburger Field.
