A trio of home runs, including a grand slam by Kody Clemens, helped lift the Texas baseball team to a 9-3 win over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on the road Tuesday night.
Clemens went 1-for-4 and gave the Longhorns (19-12) a nine-run lead when he cleared the bases with his eighth home run of the season in the sixth inning. He also scored two runs in the game.
Blair Henley got the start on the mound for Texas, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out three in three innings.
A solo home run by Masen Hibbeler got the Longhorns on the scoreboard in the first inning. Hibbeler finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Michael McCann had the other home run for Texas, the first of his career, that came in the fourth. McCann finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
David Hamilton went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Clemens scored his first run when Hamilton drove him home in the first. Jake McKenzie drove home Hamilton later in the inning to make it 3-0. McKenzie finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
Henley got into early trouble, loading the bases in the bottom of the first, but he got out of the jam with a strikeout of Scott Balfantz.
With the Longhorns leading 5-0, Clemens put the game virtually out of reach with his grand slam in the sixth.
The Islanders (16-14) added three runs in the ninth, but that’s all they could muster.
The Texas baseball team next hosts Baylor for a three-game Big 12 series beginning Friday at 6:30 p.m.
