The Final Pitch: Texas beats New Orleans 3-1

Posted April 21st, 2018

The last time the crowd at UFCU Disch-Falk Field saw junior starter Chase Shugart pitch, he delivered his best performance in a burnt-orange baseball cap. But Saturday afternoon against the New Orleans Privateers, Shugart allowed one run over 7 2/3 innings as he earned his fourth win of the season in leading No. 21 Texas to a 3-1 victory over New Orleans.

UT’s offense gave Shugart all the run support he needed in the first inning. Sophomore shortstop David Hamilton led off with a walk and then stole second. Junior left fielder Masen Hibbeler then singled back up the middle to drive Hamilton in. A double by freshman Zach Zubia moved Hibbeler to third, and then a sacrifice fly to center by freshman right fielder Andy McGuire scored Hibbeler, giving the Horns a 2-0 lead.

New Orleans scored in the fourth inning but was kept in check by Shugart and then freshman Bryce Elder.

Texas (28-14) will look to sweep New Orleans on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Blair Henley will start for the Longhorns.
