OKLAHOMA CITY — On Thursday, a loss to rival Oklahoma sent Texas back to Austin after a short stay at the Big 12’s tournament. The defeat came one day after the Big 12’s regular season champions were upset by Kansas in their opener at the double-elimination competition.
Oklahoma leadoff hitter Cade Harris scored in the first inning, and Blake Brewster later doubled the Sooners’ lead with a third-inning homer. The teams then exchanged runs in the fifth frame at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
UT was held scoreless over the game’s first four innings despite getting runners in scoring position in three of those sessions. In the fifth inning, Texas loaded the bases with no outs but only scored once. Longhorns were also stranded on base in the seventh and eighth innings.
Oklahoma (35-22) advances to face either Baylor or Kansas on Friday.
Off for the next few days, Texas (37-20) must wait to learn its fate for the NCAA tournament. The NCAA will announce if UT gets to host a regional on Sunday evening. The selection show for the entire tournament is scheduled for Monday.
