Texas baseball team uses big inning and defense to beat Xavier

Posted March 30th, 2019

A five-run fifth inning and a timely double play late turned out to be enough for the No. 13 Texas baseball team to make it two straight wins over Xavier at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Saturday night.

Texas (19-11) led by four runs heading into the final inning and ended up winning 6-5.

The Musketeers (9-17) scored three runs in the top of the ninth to make things interesting after Texas built a comfortable lead.

A double play induced by Matteo Bocchi allowed Xavier to get within one run, but Luke Stephenson grounded out to end the game after that.

A passed ball in the eighth inning allowed Kamron Fields to score the winning run.

Ryan Reynolds doubled and drove in two runs while Tate Shaw went 3-for-4, scored a run and drove in another.

Blair Henley (4-1) had a solid start on the mound for Texas, allowing two runs on seven hits through six innings. Matt Whelan pitched two innings in relief and struggled to start the ninth, giving up a walk and a single. Bocchi entered the game and didn’t fare much better early, giving up three straight singles before getting the double play and earning his first save.

Griffin Lanoue (2-2) cruised through the first four innings of his start for Xavier, but the fifth inning was a different story. Masen Hibbeler started things off with a single, followed by two more singles by Sam Bertelson and Shaw. An error allowed two runs to score on Shaw’s hit. After Duke Ellis hit a sacrifice fly to drive Shaw home, Eric Kennedy also reached base with a single. Reynolds brought two runs home with a double to cap the five-run inning and put Texas in control.

The Texas baseball team goes for the series sweep Sunday at noon.
