Let’s use Texas’ roster, history and scouting reports to countdown to the start of the 2017 football season. Today, we are only 79 days away from Texas’ home game against Maryland.

Which Longhorn wears No. 79? Sophomore offensive lineman Garrett Thomas, a 2015 signee who appeared in last year’s 41-7 win over UTEP. Texas fans, though, may remember another lineman – future Super Bowl champion Tony Hills – wearing that number from 2005-07.

Who also wears No. 79? San Jose State OL Troy Kowalski (nine starts in 2016); Oklahoma State DT Darrion Daniels (15 tackles)

Fun fact about No. 79: The longest plays for UT in a bowl game are James Street’s 79-yard pass to Cotton Speyrer in the 1969 Cotton Bowl and Ernie Koy’s 79-yard run in the 1965 Orange Bowl. Street and Speyrer also connected on the third-longest bowl play, a 78-yard TD pass in that aforementioned 36-13 win over Tennessee.
