Let’s use Texas’ roster, history and scouting reports to countdown to the start of the 2017 football season. Today, we are only 40 days away from Texas’ home game against Maryland.
Which Longhorn wears No. 40? LB Naashon Hughes, who has logged 109 tackles and 26 starts in this career. A fifth-year senior, Hughes joins DB Antwuan Davis and K Mitchell Becker as the last ties to the Mack Brown era. RB Trenton Hafley, a walk-on from Burnet, also wears No. 40.
Who also wears No. 40? Texas Tech LB Dakota Allen (87 tackles in 2015)
Fun fact about No. 40: The Texas defense allowed scores on 40 of its 47 red-zone chances in 2016. That .851 percentage ranked 69th in the NCAA (UT was tied with Toledo and Western Kentucky), so you could argue that Texas was better in the red zone since it ranked 90th in scoring defense and 94th in total defense. In April, Texas ended its spring game with a goal-line stop.
