Football season will be here before you know it. Through the dog days of summer, we’re going to get you prepared with a series on some of the best players Texas will face in 2018.
Who is he?
USC got a big boost during the offseason when Cameron Smith chose to come back for his senior season. The middle linebacker has been an anchor for the Trojans, leading them in tackles each of the past two seasons, and his return adds to a wealth of experience on defense. Smith had a career-high 112 total tackles in 2017, including 11 tackles for loss.
“I felt like I had more to prove, that I could get better, and that I wanted to help this program win more games,” he told the Sacramento Bee. “And it’s fun here.”
He’s also got a passion for wine making.
What should the Longhorns watch for?
Much of Smith’s role is as a run-stopper, but he shouldn’t be underestimated in coverage. Just ask Utah. As a freshman in 2015, he made three interceptions against the Utes – one of them returned for a 55-yard touchdown. Tom Herman has talked about bringing back the “Texas tight end,” and Week 3 would be a good time for that threat to take hold. Otherwise, Smith will be happy to clog the middle of the field all game long.
Smith had nine total tackles against the Longhorns in 2017.
