As he decides his future, Shane Buechele opts to stay away from Texas’ football team

Posted February 6th, 2019

With a transfer from Texas in his likely future, junior quarterback Shane Buechele is no longer participating in team activities.

Texas coach Tom Herman told reporters on Wednesday that Buechele remains on scholarship this spring. Buechele entered the NCAA’s transfer portal last month. As recently as Jan. 19, Herman had said that Buechele was still free to workout with the team and participate in spring practices.

During a press conference on Wednesday, however, Herman said that Buechele did not feel comfortable with going through team activities with a transfer looming. Texas coaches are checking in with Buechele every week or so. He still has access to the team facilities.

Said Herman: “But, yeah, he just, his comfort level was not great with trying to go through (team activities), and I certainly respect that.”

Buechele could still return to Texas, but signs are pointing to him leaving as a graduate transfer. He redshirted this past season after appearing in only two games, so he will have two years of eligibility remaining. Over the 2016 and 2017 seasons, Buechele started in 19 games.
