Texas junior outside hitter Haley Eckerman has been named the Big 12 Conference’s preseason player of the year.
It was an obvious choice since Eckerman won the post-season honor last fall, when Texas won the NCAA volleyball championship. The Longhorns probably will be ranked No. 1 in the country to start the season.
Last year, Eckerman led the team in kills per set with 4.38 and points at 5.0. Her main competition for player of the year likely will come from her teammate Bailey Webster, who was most outstanding player in last year’s Final Four.
Eckerman, Webster and middle blocker Khat Bell were unanimous selections to the preseason all-conference team.
League coaches select the team, although they are not allowed to vote on their own players.
