This week’s Big 12 power poll, put together by our own Kevin Lyttle:
No. 1: OKLAHOMA STATE (8-5 last year) — The Big 12’s preseason favorite Cowboys had better ride herd on this middle-tier SEC foe. This week: vs. Mississippi State (8-5).
No. 2: TCU (7-6) — Yes, the Frogs flash SEC speed. But they’re small and fast. The Bayou Bengals are big and fast. This week: vs. LSU (10-3).
No. 3: TEXAS (9-4) — Could the Horns dig up an easier cupcake? The Aggies are ranked 121st out of 125 FBS programs by USA Today. This week: vs. New Mexico State (1-11).
No. 4: OKLAHOMA (10-3) — Clear out, Bell-dozer. The Sooners hope they’ve found their Knight in shining armour at quarterback. This week: vs. Louisiana-Monroe (8-5).
No. 5: BAYLOR (8-5) — The Terriers are no dog opponent, but Lache Seastrunk’s howling at the chance to jump-start his Heisman campaign. This week: vs. Wofford (9-4).
No. 6: KANSAS STATE (11-2) — Instead of tackling the two-time defending NCAA FCS champs, couldn’t the ‘Cats find a I-AA dreg? This week: vs. North Dakota State (14-1).
No. 7: TEXAS TECH (8-5) — There’ll be so many Cavaliers quarterbacks on the field, it’ll look like a Lake Travis scrimmage. This week: at SMU (7-6).
No. 8: WEST VIRGINIA (7-6) — The rebuilding Mountaineers hope their opening opponent resembles Mary more than Bill. This week: vs. William & Mary (2-9).
No. 9: IOWA STATE (6-7) — The battle for the hearts and minds of Iowa begins. Round II for the ‘Clones comes Sept 14, against the Hawkeyes. This week: vs. Northern Iowa (5-6).
No. 10: KANSAS (1-11) — The idle Jayhawks are at least guaranteed to be unbeaten after Week 1. Besides, they could use the extra practice. This week: Off (vs. South Dakota, Sept. 7).
