BIG 12 POWER POLL
This week’s power poll, put together by our own Kevin Lyttle:
No. 1: OKLAHOMA STATE (2-0). The Cowboys better round up some good lawyers — the NCAA posse’s about to come calling. This week: vs. Lamar (1-1). Last week’s rank: No. 1.
No. 2: BAYLOR (2-0). Sure, the competition’s been weak, but the high-octane Bears are averaging 47 points — in the first half! This week: Off. Last week’s rank: No. 2.
No. 3: OKLAHOMA (2-0,1-0). Bob Stoops’ offense stalls without a competent passer, but brother Mike’s defense bails OU out. This week: vs. Tulsa (1-1). Last week’s rank: No. 3.
No. 4: TCU (1-1). Pass-rushing beast Devonte Fields will make his season debut. Run, Baker Mayfield, run. This week: at Texas Tech (2-0), Thursday. Last week’s rank: No. 4.
No. 5: TEXAS TECH (2-0). If the Raiders bump the Frogs, something special could be brewing in Lubbock. This week: vs. TCU (1-1), Thursday. Last week’s rank: No. 6.
No. 6: KANSAS STATE (1-1). Sharp-looking juco transfer Jake Waters could quickly become one of the Big 12’s better passers. This week: vs. Massachussetts (0-2). Last week’s rank: No. 7.
No. 7: TEXAS (1-1). So much for those declarations that the program’s fixed. Tackling 101 still not on the curriculum at UT. This week: vs. Mississippi (2-0). Last week’s rank: No. 4.
No. 8: WEST VIRGINIA (1-1, 0-1). The Moutaineers have done a complete 180 — they play respectable defense, but can’t generate offense. This week: vs. Georgia State (0-2). Last week’s rank: No. 8.
No. 9: KANSAS (1-0). The Jayhawks’ win over a I-AA team jumps them over the Cyclones, who couldn’t beat their I-AA opponent. This week: at Rice (0-1). Last week’s rank: No. 10.
No. 10: IOWA STATE (0-1). Don’t worry, ‘Clones, your date with the Hawkeyes is usually just what it takes to cure your blues. This week: vs. Iowa (1-1). Last week’s rank: No. 9.
